RMR Testing Aberdeen
If You're Guessing How Much to Eat, You're Guessing Wrong Resting Metabolic Rate Testing
Cutting calories and the scale still won't move. Training hard and always running on empty. Following an app that gave you a number it made up. The problem isn't your willpower or your effort — it's that every plan you've tried was built on a guess. In one 45-minute test we measure exactly how many calories your body burns, and you leave knowing precisely what to eat.
I'm eating less and still not losing weight
Your metabolism may burn far less — or more — than the calculators assume. If your target number is wrong, no diet built on it can work. One test ends the guessing.
I train hard but I'm always tired, flat and hungry
Under-fuelling quietly wrecks recovery, performance and hormones. Find out what your body actually needs before your training pays the price.
I honestly don't know how much I should be eating
Online calculators can be out by hundreds of calories a day. Measure your real number once — then every food decision gets easier.

Why the apps get it wrong
You Already Have a Calorie Number. Here's the Problem With It.
Every calorie target you've ever been given — from an app, a watch, an online calculator or a diet plan — came from a formula. Formulas don't measure you. They take your height, weight, age and sex and assume your metabolism is average. Real metabolisms vary enormously — and if you've dieted before, yours has likely adapted and slowed, which means the formulas are more wrong for you than for almost anyone else. Every plan built on that number was set up to fail before you started it.
What your app does
Estimates — often out by 300–500 kcal/day
A population average dressed up as your number. It doesn't know your training load, your muscle mass, your dieting history or how your metabolism has adapted. Eat 400 calories under a wrong number and you stall, lose muscle, and blame yourself.
What we do
Measures your actual burn
You breathe into a metabolic analyser for around 15 minutes while resting. From the oxygen you consume, we calculate the calories your body is actually burning — the same method used in clinical research. It can't be out by 500 calories, because it isn't guessing.
Once you know your real number, everything downstream gets simple: how much to eat to lose weight without wrecking your training, how much to fuel a heavy week, and whether the plan you're following is even possible for your physiology. You leave the session with your number explained in plain English — and what to do with it.

What to expect
Simple, non-invasive, done in under an hour
The test is comfortable and straightforward. You arrive fasted, breathe normally through a metabolic mask, and we measure your exhaled gases. You leave with a full written report and a precise understanding of your energy needs.
Step 01
Arrive fasted
No food for 8 hours beforehand. Water is fine. Avoid caffeine and exercise on the morning of your test.
Step 02
Rest and breathe
Lie comfortably and breathe through a metabolic mask for 20–30 minutes while we measure your exhaled gases.
Step 03
Receive your report
A full written report covering your RMR, total daily energy needs, macronutrient breakdown, and fuelling guidance.
Step 04
Results debrief
We walk you through every number and answer your questions — so you leave with clarity, not just a spreadsheet.
Data you will receive
What your report tells you
Your RMR report goes beyond a single calorie number. It gives you a complete picture of how your body uses energy — and what to do about it.
01 Exact resting calorie burn
The precise number of calories your body burns at rest every day — your true metabolic baseline.
02 Total daily energy needs
Your RMR combined with your activity level gives your total daily calorie requirement — the number to actually eat to.
03 Macronutrient targets
Tailored protein, carbohydrate, and fat targets based on your metabolism, goals, and activity levels.
04 Metabolic adaptation signals
Whether chronic underfueling has downregulated your metabolism — and by how much — so you know what you are working with.
05 Fuelling strategy
Practical guidance on how to distribute your nutrition around training, including pre, during, and post-session timing.
06 Clear next steps
Specific, actionable recommendations — not generic advice — on where to focus to hit your weight or performance goals.

FAQs
What you are probably wondering
-
Resting Metabolic Rate testing measures the exact number of calories your body burns at rest. By knowing your RMR, you can build an accurate picture of what you actually need to eat — without under-eating or compromising energy. Many people struggling with weight loss are eating too little, not too much, which causes the body to adapt and hold onto fat. RMR testing identifies that pattern and gives you the real number to work from.
-
Online calculators use estimated formulas based on height, weight, and age. An RMR test measures your actual metabolism by analysing your exhaled gases — the gold standard method used in clinical and research settings. The difference between a formula estimate and your real RMR can be 300 to 800 calories per day. That is a significant gap when every nutrition decision is based on it. -
Yes. Endurance athletes benefit significantly from RMR testing because it forms the nutritional foundation of their training. Knowing your precise resting metabolic rate — and therefore your total daily energy needs — means your fuelling strategy is built on accurate data rather than estimates. We can combine RMR testing with VO2 max or lactate profiling for a complete performance picture.
-
Yes — and this is one of the most common reasons people come in for testing. If you have been eating less and training more but the scales will not move, chronic underfueling may have downregulated your metabolism. The test shows whether that has happened and gives you a real number to build from — which is usually significantly higher than the amount you have been eating.
-
Not at all. RMR testing is valuable for anyone who wants to understand their metabolism — whether you are a competitive athlete, someone trying to manage their weight, or simply curious about how your body uses energy. If you are making nutrition decisions, knowing your actual metabolic rate makes those decisions more accurate.
-
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the calories burned in a completely rested, fasted state in a controlled environment. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is measured under slightly less strict conditions, making it more practical and still highly accurate for real-world nutrition planning. The difference is typically small — around 10% — and RMR is the standard used in performance and clinical nutrition settings.
