What to expect
What happens on your test day
The process is straightforward. Most people are in and out within 90 minutes with a verified result in hand.
01
Arrival & Briefing
Arrive at our Aberdeen facility. We’ll walk you through exactly what the test involves, answer any questions and make sure you’re comfortable before we start. Allow 10-15 minutes.
02
The VO2 max Test
You’ll perform a progressive ramp test on a treadmill or bike wearing a mask that directly measures your oxygen consumption. The test typically takes 10-15 minutes and ends at a maximal effort
03
Recovery & Analysis
A short recovery period while we analyse your results. We use clinical-grade equipment and direct measurement - not an estimate based on heart rate. Your result is accurate and verifiable.
04
Results on the day
We provide your verified VO₂ max result document before you leave — ready for your medical appointment. We'll also explain what your result means and what to do next if you need to improve.
VO2 Max Pass Marks for Common Occupational Roles

most people who fail a VO2 max medical don’t fail because they’re unfit - they fail because they didn’t know the standard, didn’t train specifically for it, or left it too late. We fix all three. Our 12-week preparation programme is build specifically for workers who need to hit a VO2 max target and want to arrive at their medical confident they’ll pass.

Common Questions
Endurance Sports Coaching & Performance Services in Aberdeen
Will my employer accept the result from Total Endurance?
Our testing uses clinical-grade equipment with direct oxygen measurement - the gold standard for VO2 max testing. We provide a verified result document on the day. If you're unsure whether our testing meets your specific employer's requirements, contact us before booking and we'll advise.
How is this different from a Chester Step Test?
The Chester Step Test estimates VO2 max from heart rate - it's an indirect measurement with known accuracy limitations. Our testing directly measures oxygen consumption, giving a more accurate and verifiable result. For individuals with white coat syndrome or naturally higher heart rates, direct testing is a fairer assessment
How quickly can I get an appointment?
Standard bookings are typically available within one to two weeks. Fast-track bookings can be arranged within 48 hours for an additional charge. Contact us directly on 01224 900500 to check current availability for urgent requests.
What do I need to bring on the day?
Wear comfortable exercise clothing and bring appropriate footwear for running or cycling. Avoid heavy meals in the two hours before your test. If testing on your own bike, bring the bike and a copy of any specific requirements from your employer or medical provider.
What if I don't pass the required standard?
We'll tell you exactly where you are versus the required standard and what you need to do to get there. Our 12-week preparation package is specifically designed for this situation — a personalised training plan to raise your VO2 max to the required level, followed by a retest before your medical.
Can I test on my own bike?
Yes. Testing can be conducted on a treadmill or a stationary bike. If you'd prefer to test on your own bike, bring it along and we'll set it up on our trainer. Some people find testing on their own equipment more comfortable and produces a more representative result.
