A pit bull athlete has a unique fibre composition:
40-45% Type I fibres (aerobic capacity exists, but isn't the dominant system)
35-40% Type IIa fibres (hybrid workers with good power)

Fast 5K time. Quick progression over a season. Natural efficiency. These athletes look like winners because they look fast. They progress quickly. They show talent early.
The pit bull doesn't show these markers. It's slow initially. Progression is gradual, not dramatic. It's muscular and strong, not lean and efficient. There's nothing flashy about it.
Coaches compare the pit bull to the husky and border collie and think, "Not as talented." The pit bull gets pushed to the side, especially at young levels where speed and early progression are interpreted as potential.
The athletes showing natural trajectory get the coaching focus. They get the attention. They get developed.
The pit bull grinds away quietly, often in a coaching vacuum.
This is the systematic mistake: measuring potential using the wrong metrics. Speed looks like promise. Strength and durability look like mediocrity. So the pit bull gets overlooked.
But here's the thing coaches don't realise until it's too late: the metrics that predict early success are different from the metrics that predict endurance performance. A fast 5K doesn't necessarily make an elite Ironman. Natural speed doesn't necessarily make a tough competitor when the race gets hard.

The coach thinks: "This athlete needs more base work. Needs to toughen up. Needs more discipline." But the issue isn't effort. The issue is that the training stimulus doesn't match what the pit bull's physiology is built for.
The pit bull is naturally strong. It's naturally durable. It's built for sustained hard work, not for pure aerobic efficiency. When you load high-volume easy aerobic work on an athlete whose fibre composition is 40-45% Type I and 20-25% Type IIx, you're not training the system that's actually dominant. You're asking the pit bull to develop capacity in a system it doesn't have the fibre base for - yet.
Meanwhile, the pit bull's abundant Type IIa fibres (35-40%) aren't being developed aerobically. They're sitting there, capable of aerobic work, but not being asked to do it. And the pit bull's significant Type IIx fibres are being under-trained. The strength that could be a foundation is being ignored.
So what happens? The pit bull gets fatigued without the training effect it should be creating. Progress is slow. Motivation drops. The coach and athlete both wonder if the pit bull is "built for endurance." But the pit bull isn't broken. The training system is.
How to Actually Train a Pit Bull: Building Elite Through Strength
You can train a pit bull to be an elite endurance athlete. You just don't do it by copying the husky's training program. You do it by leveraging what the pit bull actually has: strength, durability, power, and mental toughness.
Step 1: Recognize What You Have
The pit bull will never be as naturally efficient as a husky. It won't move like a husky. It won't metabolise fuel the same way. But here's what it will do: it will show up. It will work hard. It will embrace the grind.
These athletes tend to be mentally tenacious. They have a thirst for work. They perform best when training is hard, when the effort is relentless, when there's no easy way out. They don't fear suffering—they embrace it.
This is a massive advantage in endurance sport. Mental toughness is harder to build than aerobic efficiency. You can't coach someone into having grit in 12 weeks. But the pit bull often has it built in.
Step 2: Build the Strength Base
Heavy resistance work. Power movements. Sustained hard efforts under load. This is where the pit bull's physiology thrives. The athlete shows up, works hard, and adapts. Leverage that.
A pit bull might not be naturally fast, but it can be incredibly strong. Build that strength first. Make it a foundation that everything else stands on.
Here's where something interesting happens: many pit bull athletes naturally gravitate towards strength-based sports like HYROX. The races that favour durability, power, and the ability to push through fatigue without breaking. These athletes often transition to obstacle course racing quickly—and excel—because the sport matches their phenotype perfectly.
But here's the key insight: that same strength is the foundation for elite endurance performance. You don't have to choose between HYROX and Ironman. You can train for both, or you can leverage the strength base to build an elite endurance athlete on a different pathway than a husky or border collie.
Step 3: Build Power and Efficiency at Higher Intensities
Once the strength base is solid, start introducing sustained efforts at tempo and threshold intensity (80-95% of FTP).
This is where the pit bull's abundant hybrid fibres (Type IIa) are engaged. The intensity is high enough to recruit them aerobically. The pit bull can sustain these efforts because strength and power are already built. This is where the pit bull starts to feel better. Threshold efforts feel sustainable because more of the available muscle pool is being recruited. Progress becomes visible.

The pit bull's Type IIa fibres are hybrid workers. At threshold and tempo intensity, they're working aerobically, but with power.
